The Cornell Note Taking Method: Full How-To (and When to Skip It)

The Cornell method has survived since the 1950s for one reason: it bakes review into the page itself. Most note systems optimize for capture — getting everything down. Cornell optimizes for what happens after class, which is where the actual learning occurs. The layout forces you to process your notes once more and leaves you with ready-made quiz questions.

Setting up the page

  • Draw a vertical line about 2.5 inches from the left edge. The narrow left strip is the cue column; the wide right area is the notes column.
  • Leave a 2-inch strip across the bottom of the page for the summary.
  • Digital works too: a two-column table in any notes app, or a Cornell template — the layout matters, the medium doesn’t.
  • One lecture per page-set. Don’t run two classes onto the same page; the cue column becomes useless for targeted review.

During class: just take notes

The in-class part of Cornell is deliberately unremarkable: write in the wide right column only. Use short phrases, abbreviations, and skipped lines between ideas. Capture definitions, examples the professor works through, and anything they repeat or write down — repetition from the front of the room is a strong exam signal.

Leave the cue column empty during class. Trying to write clever questions in real time splits your attention exactly when you need it on the lecture. The cue column is homework, and that’s by design.

After class: the 10-minute loop that does the work

Within a day — ideally the same day — come back to the page. In the cue column, write a question or keyword opposite each chunk of notes: not “mitosis” but “what are the phases of mitosis and what happens in each?” Then write a 2–3 sentence summary of the page in the bottom strip, in your own words, without copying lines from above.

This pass is where Cornell earns its reputation. Writing cues forces you to identify what each section is actually about, and the summary forces compression — both are forms of processing that plain rereading never triggers. Total cost: about ten minutes per lecture.

Reviewing: cover the notes, answer the cues

To study, cover the notes column with a hand or a folded page and answer the cue-column questions from memory. Check, mark misses, move on. Your notes have become a self-quizzing deck — which means your review sessions are active recall by default instead of rereading.

Weekly, run the cues for everything covered that week. Before exams, run the cues for the whole unit and let the misses set your priority list.

When Cornell is the wrong tool

  • Problem-solving courses (math, physics, much of engineering): the value is in worked problems, not prose notes. Take normal notes on method, then spend the “cue column time” redoing problems instead.
  • Slide-sprint lectures: when the professor posts dense slides and talks fast, annotate the slides rather than transcribing into a Cornell layout — then write cues from the annotated deck afterward.
  • Discussion seminars: the material is the argument in the room. Capture claims and objections in whatever format keeps you in the conversation; impose structure later.
  • Heavy diagram subjects: anatomy, circuits, org chem mechanisms. Draw the thing, label from memory later — the sketch is the recall tool.

The method fails without the follow-up — protect it

Cornell’s entire advantage lives in the after-class pass and the recurring cue reviews. Skip those and you’ve just got notes with an odd margin. The reliable way to keep the loop alive is to give it a fixed slot: same 10 minutes after each class, one weekly cue-review block per course.

The layout itself isn’t magic — studies on the format alone show modest effects. Can I do Cornell notes on a laptop or tablet?

What if I don’t have time to add cues after every lecture?
