How a GPA is computed

Each letter maps to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0; with plus/minus, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, and so on). Multiply each course’s points by its credit hours, add them up, and divide by the total credit hours. A 3-credit A and a 4-credit B is (12 + 12) ÷ 7 = 3.43.

Schools differ on whether A+ is 4.0 or 4.3, whether there is an A− at all, and how repeats and pass/fail count. Check the registrar’s page; the toggle here covers the two common schemes.

Cumulative GPA

Your cumulative GPA is your total grade points across every semester divided by total credits. Enter your GPA so far and the credits it covers, and the calculator combines it with this semester.

Frequently asked questions

Does this use a 4.0 scale?

Yes, with an optional plus/minus scheme (A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B− 2.7, C+ 2.3, C− 1.7, D+ 1.3). Without plus/minus, letters map to whole numbers.

What GPA do I need to reach a 3.5 (or any target)?

Enter your cumulative GPA and credits, add this semester’s courses with the grades you expect, and adjust the letters until the cumulative number reaches your target. That tells you what this semester has to look like.

How do pass/fail courses count?

At most schools a Pass earns credit but no grade points and is left out of the GPA. Leave those courses out here.
