How weighted grades work
Each category contributes its score times its weight. A 90 on homework worth 15% adds 13.5 points toward the final grade. Add the contributions of everything graded, divide by the total weight of everything graded, and you have your average so far. The rest of the weight is still open.
Syllabi often give one weight for a whole category (“Exams: 60%”) with several exams inside it. Enter the category once with the average of the exams so far, or enter each exam at its share (three exams at 20% each).
Points-based classes
If the syllabus gives points instead of percentages, use the points as the weight: a 150-point midterm and a 300-point final are weights of 150 and 300. The calculator scales them to a percentage of the total.
Frequently asked questions
What if my weights do not add up to 100?
The calculator scales them, and tells you how much of the grade your rows account for. If the syllabus weights sum to 100 but yours do not, a category is missing; add it with a blank score.
How do I handle a dropped lowest score?
Enter the category with the scores that will count. If the drop has not happened yet, enter the average without the lowest score and treat the remaining weight as still open.
Can I save this?
Not here; nothing is stored. Upload your syllabus to Classmaite and the weights are read for you and the grade is tracked as scores come in.
